Jon joined us in April 2022 and, as an introduction, writes ...
The role of a Lay Pastor is a new venture for both me and the church family at Alresford. I have had a life long association
with the Methodist Church, as my father was a Methodist Minister. Around thirty years ago I became involved with working
with Children and Young People; with particular focus on the 11+ age range. During this time, many people suggested I
should consider becoming a Local Preacher. My response was “No, I have not felt God calling to me!” Well, much to my
amazement in 2005 he did and so I embarked on the training which resulted in my becoming a fully Accredited Local
Preacher in June 2009.
I decided to apply to be the Lay Pastor at Alresford after being nudged on three separate occasions, from three different
sources. Knowing how previously others told me I should consider being a Local Preacher, and my excuse in reply, I thought
it best not test God’s patience too much second time around.
By profession I was a Charted Civil Engineer, working in the Construction Industry for over 42 years, before retiring at the
end of March 2020, just as the first Covid lockdown began. I am not sure I really know what retirement is like having spent
much of it under “lockdown regime” and now I have taken on the role of Lay Pastor perhaps I never will!
My wife, Diane and I have been married for 43 years and live we in Valley Park, between Eastleigh and North Baddesley. We
have two grown-up children who both have flown the nest and set up home for themselves. Our son works in London as a
free-lance graphic designer and our daughter, who is married, lives in Eastleigh and we are truly blessed have two young
grandchildren living so very close by.
I have no specific hobbies but enjoy reading, my favourite writers being John Grisham, Lee Child and David Baldacci. I also
enjoy watching most sport and may if time permits try taking up golf again, after a break of about twenty years! When I was
working full –time I would try to go swimming or fit in a gym session during my lunch hour and my ever tightening
waistband suggests I need to start a structured fitness regime again.
